Alexander was a big fan of Roederer white wine, who asked him to make a custom wine for the royal family. To meet royal standards, Roederer created a sweet champagne called Cristal. He created it by carefully mixing Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes from Côte de Blanc, Val de la Marne, and Montagne de Reims.

It was this desire to produce the best wine in the region that led Lewis to acquire Champagne Grand Cru vineyards. This gave it an edge over other wineries as the flagship champagne dominated overseas markets in the US and Russia in the 1870s.

Roderer’s success was undoubtedly fruitful, so much so that in 1872, under the son of Louis Roderer (also known as Louis), distribution reached 2.5 million bottles, which is 1/10 of the world’s champagne production. In 1909, Louis Roederer’s house was considered “the official supplier of champagne for the imperial court of Russia” – a coup that was later canceled after the overthrow of the tsar during the 1917 revolution. During The Russian Revolution in 1917, Roederer continued to produce champagne and eventually entered the commercial market for the “common people” in 1945 (although Cristal is not an ordinary drink at all).

In the 21st century (until 2012, the last crop you can buy), the Cristal was not released in 2001, 2003, and 2010 simply because it was not considered good enough. Cristal produced 300,000-400,000 bottles a year in the first half of the 2000s [12], but by 2010 had doubled to 800,000 bottles.

Since 2012, all Cristal vintages have been made entirely from Demeter-certified biodynamically grown fruits, a benchmark for the House of Roederer. Champagne Louis Roederer is made from the finest grapes, along with the wine cellar Louis Roederer Reserve, which is part of the cuvée.

The wine is aged for 6 years in the cellar and left for at least 8 months after disgorgement to achieve perfect ripeness. The wine is aged for three years in the cellar and another six months after disgorgement. Produced from vineyards owned by Roederer, which are mainly biodynamic, the wine is particularly pure and fresh. The clear bottle still shows the clarity of the champagne, and the wrapper ensures its integrity.

Just like everything beautiful is “worth it,” that is, expensive, yes, it is a rare and special wine, it has a unique history, and when people see a bottle, they understand that you mean it. He also noted that it would be a cuvée for connoisseurs – a very special wine for special occasions – but that the price would be on par with the Roederer harvest, not the Cristal.

As noted earlier, this prestige curve was created in 1876 at the request of Tsar Alexander II, who indicated that the design of a regular champagne bottle renders its color and sizzle invisible to the eye. To this day, Cristal bottles contain both – and although Alexander was killed five years later, at least he did not fall victim to the champagne trap.
